Edson and Margaret Larson Foundation Leadership Scholarship
Established by Edson and Margaret Larson
Edson Larson was a successful farmer and Army Air Corp member who served overseas and as a legal clerk while stationed in the United States. Margaret Brunsdale, daughter of former North Dakota Governor Norman Brunsdale, studied at Condordia College and graduated from Wellesley College.
Edson and Margaret married and made their home in Mayville. Before Edson passed away, he arranged to have his estate used for a number of charitable purposes, including the establishment of a premier leadership scholarship for North Dakota students.
The Edson and Margaret Larson Foundation Leadership Scholarship is available to North Dakota students who attend any North Dakota or Red River Valley (Concordia, Crookston, or Moorhead) post-secondary institution, and who have intentions of returning to a community in the state. Developing leaders for the future of North Dakota is the overall goal of this program.
This unique opportunity could include:
- $12,000 for IRS allowable (PDF 18KB) post-secondary expenses, to include qualifying study abroad program
- $3,000 for tuition and fees to participate in a North Dakota leadership program
- Opportunities to “give back” to North Dakota and encourage others to participate in this leadership program including public speaking engagements
- Opportunities to serve on statewide boards and committees
Criteria:
- Applicants can be an incoming college freshman, a graduate student or a continuing student of any age.
- Applicants must have a 3.7 GPA or higher; and must have a composite score of 27 or higher on the ACT.
- Applicants must be accepted into or currently enrolled in any North Dakota or Red River Valley (Concordia, Crookston, or Moorhead) postsecondary education program.
- Applicants must demonstrate excellence in community service, school activities, communication and problem solving skills, and cultural competency.
- Applicants must possess self awareness and have an understanding of their own personal strengths.
- Applicants must have career plans with a commitment to ongoing learning.
- Applicants must be a graduate of or currently live in a Dollars for Scholars community.
